Strand Receives 2012 Engineering Excellence Honor Award – ACEC Indiana
Strand and Columbus City Utilities received the 2012 Honor Award from ACEC Indiana for the New Wastewater Treatment Facility in Columbus, Indiana. The new facility has increased plant capacity for future growth of the city; improved water quality; an expected decrease in biosolid production by 65%, significantly decreasing operating costs; and has incorporated energy-efficient technologies and a water reuse process. With its new location 2 miles from downtown, it allows the City to create additional revenues through new commercial development along that riverfront property and the air is now more pleasant for residents and more inviting for visitors. The new facility will aid in continuing with the City’s 20/20 vision to revitalize its downtown area. The project was completed 3 months ahead of schedule and $17 million under budget.

Monona Drive Concrete Paving Honored by WisDOT
Strand Associates, Inc. was awarded the WisDOT 2010 Outstanding Highway Construction Award – Concrete Paving Category. The project was also recently awarded the American Public Works Association – Wisconsin Chapter 2011 Public Works Project of the Year award and the WisDOT Excellence in Highway Design Award for Urban Design.
Four important factors contributed to this highly successful project: complexity, schedule, location, and communication. Successfully maintaining access to businesses throughout construction was key to the overall success of this project. The contractor’s operations were confined to a 30 to 40 foot work zone while maintaining three lanes of traffic and pedestrian access within the remaining 50 to 60 feet. At times, there were 10 to 12 contractors working within this confined worked zone. Despite these constricted working conditions, the contractor was able to finish the project ahead of schedule.
