After earning a 2022 American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of Wisconsin Engineering Excellence Best of State Award, the USH 18/121 (Verona Road) Reconstruction Stage 2 project went on to receive a 2022 ACEC Engineering Excellence National Recognition Award. The US 18/151 (Verona Road) Stage 2 Project included the reconstruction of more than 2 miles of Verona Road between County PD and Raymond Road and nearly a mile of County PD. This multi-faceted project combined innovative ideas and concepts, including a unique two-span, single-point urban interchange with offset piers, aesthetic treatments on structures that reflect unique regional geological formations, greater local connectivity, and cost-effective construction staging focused on establishing the outer roadways first and then working inward. The project was completed on time in October 2020 and under budget at $85.7 million. The success of Stage 2 was immediate: in just 1 year, total crashes decreased by 60 percent, injury crashes by 40 percent, and travelers have saved more than 300,000 hours of delay and associated emissions. Stage 2 is an exemplary, cost-conscious, and successfully planned and executed project that will provide long-lasting economic benefits for Wisconsin.
