The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) selected the Illinois Route 47 Environmental Assessment and Combined Design Report for the 2022 Award for Exceptional Consulting Engineering Service in the Urban category. The report covered a 5-mile section of IL 47 through the City of Woodstock in McHenry County, Illinois. The existing three-lane corridor is to be widened to four lanes with a raised median to relieve congestion. A shared-use path will run along the east side of the roadway throughout the entire corridor. The IL 47 study identified improvements through geometric creativity, use of roundabouts, and incorporation of a pedestrian tunnel under the Union Pacific/Metra railroad tracks that cross the corridor that will save taxpayers an estimated $30 million and minimize disruption to local businesses.
