The American Public Works Association Chicago Metro Chapter-Suburban Branch awarded the DuPage County Division of Transportation’s Gary Avenue Multi-Use Trail a 2022 Public Works Project of the Year Award in the Transportation, less than $5 million, category. For years, the Gary Avenue corridor in Carol Stream, Illinois, has experienced continued development and growth with little to no sidewalk nor connectivity for pedestrians and bicyclists. To increase access to the many restaurants, gas stations, hotels, and shopping centers along Gary Avenue, 2.8 miles of multi-use path was installed between St. Charles Road and Army Trail Road. In addition to the path, 1,700 feet of sidewalk was constructed along Army Trail Road and 36 new Americans with Disabilities Act-accessible multi-use path curb ramps were installed throughout the project corridor. The Gary Avenue Multi-Use Trail connects the adjacent Great Western and West Branch DuPage River Trails, providing continuous facilities for bicyclists and pedestrians traveling through Carol Stream.
