The Decatur County Highway Department project was awarded a 2025 Engineering Excellence Merit Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of Indiana.

Located in Greensburg, Indiana, the Decatur County Highway Department had outgrown its original 3.5-acre facility, which was built in 1949. Without modern facilities, the highway department struggled to upkeep its equipment fleet. The new highway department was constructed on a 19-acre site and includes four structures to support the department’s operations. This project involved design of the building layout, driveway, parking lot, circulation pattern, mass grading, storm sewer, and stormwater detention.

The primary structure features office space, an equipment maintenance area, a wash bay, and a bridge shop. The new three-bay maintenance area provides ample space and equipment to safely and effectively maintain all the department’s equipment. The maintenance area is equipped with multiple hose reels for compressed air and water, a dedicated welding area with proper ventilation, and six mobile modular lifts capable of hoisting up to 54 tons. These systems and the spacious environment contribute to a safer workplace and have improved employee efficiency.

Support structures include a large dry storage building for equipment storage, a material handling structure for storage and loading of salt, sand, and stone, and a fueling station with gasoline, diesel, and off-road diesel to support all County Departments. The structures and site were designed to accommodate future expansion, and the stormwater management system was sized to include future development of an adjacent County-owned property.
