The I-39/90 Mega Reconstruction Project won the 2017 Wisconsin Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) Project of the Year Award for the implementation of the Comparative Travel Time and real-time Probe Data deployment systems. The project was recognized at the ITS Wisconsin forum in early November.

About the Project: The I-39/90 reconstruction project from Madison to Beloit has involved significant ITS  improvements as it is a major tourism and trucking route. The interstate was originally built in the late 1950s and currently carries up to 60,000 vehicles per day, with crash rates that are approximately 20 percent higher than the statewide average.  As part of the project, Probe Data (real-time travel speed data) was implemented along more than 70 miles of the I-39/90 alternate routes, and displayed on both permanent Dynamic Message Sign (DMS) boards and temporary Portable Changeable Message Signs (PCMS). These signs provide comparative, real-time, travel time data to a specific destination along the corridor for both the interstate and alternate routes.  These cost-effective technologies reduce travel delays during and after reconstruction by allowing drivers to make informed routing decisions.  For more information on this project or our other ITS services, please contact us.
