The Kankakee River Metropolitan Agency (KRMA) upgrades project (Good KRMA: Upgrading a Valuable Regional Asset) won a 2018 ACEC Illinois Excellence Special Achievement Award.
About the Project: Innovative designs integrated throughout all 4 phases of KRMA’s $58.8 million wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) upgrade project solved numerous facility and environmental issues. Substantial improvements to treatment, system automation, energy, and odor control, as well as a creative approach to the facility’s National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit were successfully implemented to meet and exceed KRMA’s goals to continue to evolve toward a sustainable, net-zero energy facility that balances the needs of both the community and environment. KRMA operates a 25 MGD average design (100 MGD peak) flow WWTP that serves several communities, including 31 industrial users. Major improvements were made to nearly every building and process, including SCADA system; pumping and preliminary treatment; hydraulics; aeration system; disinfection; anaerobic digestion; biosolids management; and energy efficiency. KRMA obtained $2.65 million in grants and principal forgiveness, and is realizing significant annual savings in electricity, natural gas, and building maintenance.
