The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) engaged us for the Phase I Study of Illinois Route 47 (IL 47) from US Route 14 to Charles Road through the city of Woodstock in McHenry County, Illinois. The IL 47 study recommends multi-lane roundabouts to accommodate the projected 34,000 daily travelers. The existing three-lane corridor is to be widened to four lanes with a raised median. Replacement of sidewalks under the Union Pacific/Metra Railroad (RR) with a multi-use tunnel beneath the tracks provides room for the additional through lanes. The identified improvements are anticipated to save taxpayers an estimated $30 million by avoiding replacement of the RR bridge, which would have required a temporary railroad track, acquisition of six businesses, and two more years of construction. The IDOT IL 47 Phase I Study was selected for an Honor Award through the American Council of Engineering Companies of Illinois Engineering Excellence Awards, which was presented to the Department on February 20, 2020, in Rosemont, Illinois.
