SR 9 traverses through both urban and rural areas. This structural overlay project was changed from a hot-mix asphalt to a thin concrete overlay near the end of the project development process because the thin concrete overlay option provided a lower design-life cost. Our team was able to meet the accelerated schedule and submit both Stage 3 and final tracings documents within 3 months of receiving the final pavement design. This 5-mile project addressed moderate deterioration of pavement surface, beginning at SR 26 and extending to SR 37 on the south side of Marion. The thin concrete overlay was placed over the existing asphalt after milling and patching to produce a smooth surface. Special consideration was needed to tie in the US 35 intersection to the 3-inch profile grade increase of SR 9. This project was awarded the 2018 Excellence in Concrete Pavement Award for overlay projects.
