During our time as both Green Infrastructure and Watercourse On-Call Consultants for MMSD, we completed the design of a green infrastructure project beneath the Marquette Interchange in downtown Milwaukee. The goal of the project was to store and treat runoff from the interchange while adapting the underutilized space for public use. The design included three bioretention basins with a combined area of 8,600 square feet, a 1,700-foot permeable pavement maintenance path, rock-lined channels, a permeable paver plaza, and approximately four acres of native landscaping. The design process included close coordination with the public, City of Milwaukee, MMSD, Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT), Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR), and various other stakeholder groups. This fast-tracked project also included two stakeholder meetings and two public information meetings, each involving creation and discussion of multiple concept designs.
