We assisted the University of Cincinnati in the development of a campus-wide green infrastructure master plan to improve water quality as part of a wetlands reclamation project at the University’s Clermont College in Batavia, Ohio. To begin implementing the master plan, we provided the University with design services for green infrastructure features identified in the first phase of the plan. The first phase focused on incorporating green infrastructure features upstream from the existing wetlands to provide water quality benefits. The green infrastructure features included in the first phase consisted of three bioretention basins, a bioswale, and a slope stabilization area. The bioretention basins and bioswale were designed in series to provide a multifaceted level of treatment along the path of stormwater flow. Each was sized to capture a water quality volume event, with the intent to reduce stormwater runoff through infiltration and evapotranspiration, or slowly release flows back into the existing wetlands. The green features were planted with a wide variety of native plants and plugs. Because of the highly visible site, the University intends to use the project area as an outdoor learning center that provides an excellent example of how sustainable stormwater management can be incorporated on all its campuses.
