Emergency Water Supply
Interconnect –
Schaumburg, IL
The Village of Schaumburg hired us to investigate
the potential to provide an emergency interconnection
for up to 10-mgd of flow between the Village, which is
served by the Northwestern Suburban Joint Action Water
Agency (JAWA) and the Dupage Water Commission (DWC).
Potential routes were identified in the study to extend
24- and 30-inch diameter water main from DWC's 7.5-mg
standpipe in Roselle, Illinois, to the pump station in
Schaumburg’s high-pressure zone. A subsequent study
that looked at right-of-way issues in more detail was
performed. This subsequent study identified the
potential to construct one pumping facility at the DWC
standpipe for the benefit of both DWC and Schaumburg, as
opposed to constructing two separate pump stations. As
a result of this cost-saving measure, budgeting for the
project became a reality in 1999.
The 24-inch diameter water main from the DWC standpipe
along the METRA railroad right-of-way and into
Schaumburg has recently been constructed. An
emergency interconnection between the Village of Roselle
and Schaumburg is also being planned. The construction
cost was more than $2,000,000 and the project involved
numerous railroad and highway crossings, including the
Elgin-O’Hare Expressway and Irving Park Road (Highway
19).
