Exterior of Grand Chute Fire Department

Town of grand chute administrative fire station - grand chute, wi
The Town of Grand Chute Fire Department in 2006 developed a Five-Year Strategic Plan that included a goal to improve emergency response time. The selection of a new location and construction of a new station was identified as an important criteria in reaching that goal. Built on municipally owned land with direct access to Grand Chute Boulevard, the new station has a masonry exterior to match the nearby municipal building. The size of the facility is 26,500 square feet (including mezzanines) with a combined Apparatus Bay/Command Vehicle Garage area of 10,500 square feet. The surrounding site provides ample room for maneuvering of apparatus, parking, and training activities.

The facility has an 80-foot deep Apparatus Bay with five and one-half bays, four of which have drive through capacity. All of the overhead doors are 14 feet wide by 14 feet high, which provides sufficient room at both top and sides for the largest fire service vehicle. The insulated overhead doors are operated by remote controls mounted in each vehicle and they have large window sections that provide both a view to the outside and ample natural daylight to augment the three large ridge-mounted skylights. The wide bays contribute to the safety of firefighters who rush to board the vehicles after donning their turnout gear at the bay-side locker area. Lighting for the Apparatus Bay consists of high efficiency fast-on fluorescent fixtures. Extra Voice/Data Cabling is provided to support functions of an Emergency Operations Center for the Town of Grand Chute. The primary heat for the bay area is an in-floor hydronic system; this heat promotes quick drying of the floor and benefits firefighter comfort.

Exterior of Lake Mills Fire Department

Lake Mills Fire Department – Lake Mills, WI
The former Lake Mills Fire Department was constructed in 1962 and served the community well for more than 40 years. Inadequate room for an efficient work environment and the trend towards increasing size of fire service apparatus created the need for more space and an upgraded facility. It was determined that the best course of action was to demolish the existing structure entirely and build an entirely new facility on the same site. In order to maintain continuous operations at the site for Fire Department emergency services, the project was staged in two phases.

The exterior is constructed of brick masonry. The main entry has a tower structure sheathed with metal panels similar to those found on the previous station. The facility has five apparatus bays, four with drive-through capacity. The apparatus bay area has direct access to the decontamination area, laundry, tool crib, dive equipment and SCBA room, locker rooms, and radio room. The office/training portion of the station has a large capacity training room, kitchen, offices, conference room, toilet rooms, exercise room, and dormitory rooms. There is a patio overlooking the pond for use by the volunteers. On the front of the station are six cast stone elements: Dalmatian dog, firefighters helmet, ladder and pike pole, fire engine, hydrant, and a Memorial Tribute to the Heroes of September 11, 2001. Public access throughout the building is barrier-free.

The primary emphasis in the design was to provide an efficient and safe facility for the firefighters and other emergency service personnel.
