Presentation Abstract
Wisconsin winters can create significant operational
difficulties, and wintertime process failures are difficult to correct. This
presentation is intended to identify problems common in biological treatment
systems that experience significant temperature swings and provide useful
strategies for minimizing the impact of these problems. This presentation will
focus primarily on nitrification and seasonal foaming, but it will also address
sludge production, storage of out-of-service tanks, and potential
holiday-related upsets. The relationships between wasting strategies and
wintertime process failures will be discussed in detail along with the basics of
nitrification theory.
