KRMA WWTP Continues to be Recognized as a Success Story in the Industry and Community
Equipment dating back to as far as 1936, Kankakee Regional Metropolitan Agency (KRMA) WWTP underwent a major, 4-phased, $58 million renovation over the span of 6 years. New regulation requirements prompted the upgrades, but, ironically, a digester explosion during the design phase sped up the process to receive state funding so the project could continue moving forward.
Committed to becoming a net-zero energy facility that balances the needs of both the community and environment, the Agency is already realizing significant annual savings for electrical and natural gas, and produces more than 100 percent of the plant’s electricity during low energy periods.
